The eleven teams gathered in downtown Los Angeles, where Phil began the 16th season of the Amazing Race. After using public transportation to get to the airport, the first 3 teams were to travel to Chile, the first destination of the race, on plane #1. After mechanical failure to plane #1, all teams boarded plane #2 and arrived in Chile at the same time.
Roadblock: (only 1 team may perform): Walk cable 120ft above ground with the length being approx. the size of a football field. Upon finishing, Caite & Brent misread their clue and did not follow the instructions correctly (this would lead them to a penalty upon reaching the mat). Even though she had a lot of difficulty performing this task Brandy completed it along with all the others, except for Adrian. When the first 10 teams had checked into the pit stop, Phil visited Adrian and Dana at the road block, to inform them they had been eliminated.
Detour: Teams were to carry painting supplies and hunt for a house that matched the color of their paint and finish the big white spot on the outside of the house. Jeff & Jordan finished first. Brent & Caite struggled to find the location. Dan & Jordan lost a brush on the way to the location and as such suffered a 15 min. penalty at the pit stop. Allison and Steve first went inside a house and helped paint a wall, before realizing they were in the wrong place.
Pit Stop: Valparaiso, Chile – Jeff & Jordan, who arrived first, won a trip for 2 to Vancouver, BC. Brent & Caite arrived 2nd, however, they incurred a 30 min. penalty putting them in 7th place. Dan & Jordan actually finished in 3rd place, however, they incurred a 15 min. penalty putting them in 8th place
